Amazon pulls THE CORRODING EMPIRE

Fascinating. We just received an email from Amazon informing us that the title, cover, and author of THE CORRODING EMPIRE were "misleading". This is rather amusing, of course, considering that Tor Books and John Scalzi have devoted an entire career to ripping off everyone from Heinlein to Star Trek.

In any event, we will have CORROSION by Harry Seldon, complete with a new cover, back up soon. It's not like we aren't in the habit of anticipating enemy action, after all.

Sadly for Tor Books, there will be no similarly easy fix for the disaster that is THE COLLAPSING EMPIRE.

The funny thing is that McRapey is dumb enough to actually brag about it. He has NO idea how this makes him look to normal readers. Note that this is actually the second time he's gone running to Amazon to ban a book.
John Scalzi‏ @scalzi
Also, a few minutes ago got confirmation of a very cool thing involving Empire that I can't yet tell you about, he said, entirely unsubtly.
Yeah, so, about that.... this is now publishing.

Amusement intensifies.
Nick Siekierski‏ @ResearchTeacher
@scalzi Reading The Corroding Empire now, love it!

John Scalzi @scalzi
@ResearchTeacher Tell that to the actual author. I'm sure they would appreciate the feedback.
I have to admit, I prefer the replacement title and cover myself. Tor really just blows from A to Z. It's really rather remarkable how they've gone from Ender's Game to this.

That's.... amazing. WTH is wrong with these people? They can't compete, so they appeal to amenable authority to silence their critics. It's like they're SJWs or something...

What is confusing is why john scalzi wouldn't want people to be confused and buy his book. That's awfully kind of him.

No, the money is definitely not lost. As absolute last resort (it probably won't come to that) we'll send you the .epub file if you send us your preorder receipt. But we have no reason to believe at present, that we can't resolve this quickly with changes to the cover.

Blogger Frenzy March 20, 2017 2:36 PM

On Amazon my search box filled temporally with The Corroding Empire before disappearing! Checked out the SJW Scalzi's book, has zero stars, one would think he would have paid a shill to give them some 5 stars reviews or at least his master(wife) would have.

Amazon.ca doesn't show the book, but if you've already purchased it you can send it to your devices and read it.

Since Kindle has never mislead me about the ontological status of its contents before, this calls for Tor-grade poetry.

Found a typo in the prologue. Markku/Vox, have you considered some form of typo submission system where readers can immediately note and submit them as they're read?

I'm not likely to make a document for each book I read to record the list of typos, nor put in the effort to update it periodically and submit the completed list when I'm done reading. I think you've also noted not wanting to be spammed by email/comment for each typo one at a time.

I'm thinking something like a software bug tracking system to accept many submissions and allow weeding out or grouping redundant reports ... but ideas are cheap.

Most likely Scalzi claimed that Johan's books was phishing-like procedure to steal from people looking for his book.

Amazon looked at both titles and authors and realised that they are too similar in pronunciation and words, so the book got axed.

I guess if you had placed dressed-like-a-girl Scalzi as a cover Amazon might have thought it was comedy and wouldn't even dared touched the book with a ten foot pole.

Anonymous Quadko March 20, 2017 3:37 PM

On my kindle I can highlight words and choose "more" from the popup menu; one of the options there is to report such errors. Supposedly Amazon routes those appropriately; no idea if that is a per-book setting or if it works for all books.

I would love to hear from authors or publishers confirming that actually makes it to them in useful fashion.

Blogger Ceerilan March 20, 2017 5:22 PM

I just read the congratulations for Corroding Empire on Scalzi's twitter feed. That is quite the troll.

Blogger Cataline Sergius March 20, 2017 5:22 PM

Look I can understand how something by Scalzi could get redirected to listings by William Marston...

Okay, no actually I can't.

I have no idea how anything related to John Scalzi would have ended up even tangentially connected to somebody as Game-literate as that skin crawling creep William Moulton Marston...

Marston was a proto-Alpha SJW. A well known and respected man who was also an utter hypocrite. An effective polygamist with a BDSM fetish. (*Note; his children deny the BDSM thing to this day but the fact that they didn't know Dad was fucking "Aunt Olive," puts a heavy discount on their opinions.*) After he twisted his wife's arm with the threat of abandonment, Elizabeth and Olive settled themselves into the role of sister-wives. Continuing to live together long after Marston himself was dead, (in fact Olive mourned Elizabeth deeply when she passed on). As I said, Solid Game.

No one on Earth has ever accused Scalzi of being an Alpha-SJW or Alpha-Anything.

He has a completely clean record there.

I think, Vox would be the first man to come to his defense on that point.

So why is Amazon redirecting Johan Kalsi inquires to a collection of 1940's Wonder Woman comics?!?!?

all McRapey has done is uncouple his dud from the superior marketing of the instant classic Corrosion.

This.

CORROSION may have been originally conceived, in part, as an epic troll of Scalzi and Tor. But the final product is much, much better than the excerpts I've read from the beardy blowjob merchant's interplanetary fruit trade novel.

It's a very good book, a wonderful throwback to Golden Age skiffy.

Rod Walker pulled off an excellent homage to Heinlein's Juvies. CORROSION is, if anything, more Asimov than Asimov. It's Asimov with an injection of heart, humour and humanity.

But then I care that we do not publish biolumenescent merde instead of shat we agreed to write. How old fashioned if me.

Corroding Empire was a great read. Getting an early copy for review was awesome. Watching the fireworks today has been hilarious. I like the new cover even better. In terms of functionality, I like Amazon. I cannot think of an instance when they didn't have what I wanted at a good price. Even better, I can use their stores in foreign lands to send a gift to family and friends without having to involve customs.

What I dislike is that they have no competition. That means they can drop a product for any reason and it can have a devastating impact on the producer of said product. I wonder whether it would be feasible to start an Alt-Right version (say, Mississippi or StLawrence or Nile)?

I might not be understanding this correctly, but it seems to me that Amazon and JS are being racist here. Because if Johan Kalsi is the Finn's actual name, then those two Leftist bigots are denying him his cultural heritage by forcing him to use a more American sounding name.

Scalzi already has an "All About Eve" aura about himself when it comes to Vox. It has truly been creepy watching how Scalzi has been turning himself into a low rent carbon copy of Vox.

Hey John. Because of course you'll eventually read this.

You ran to mommy again. Because daddy wasn't there, and because bad, bad man was about to say or do something that'd make you cry.

The women in that audience cringed. In two decades, nothing has changed. All you've done is increase the range of who's doing the cringing. And they have considerably more ability to damage your bottom line.

But of course you already know this.
